DRY EYE
WHAT IS DRY EYE?
Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is a chronic condition that develops when your eyes do not produce and maintain enough tears, or you do not have quality tears to keep the eye's surface lubricated. This results in multiple symptoms that range from person to person. This can be due to a reduction in tear production, or increased tear evaporation from a lack in lipid in the tears that stem from the oil glands in the eyelids. The effects can range from minor dryness and discomfort to pain, blurred vision and frequent infections.
DRY EYE SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of dry eye syndrome can vary depending on the severity of the condition, but can include:
  • Dry, achy eyes.
  • Burning or stinging.
  • Irritation.
  • Watery eyes.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Pain.
  • Foreign body sensation.
CAUSES OF DRY EYE DISEASE
The reasons that dry eyes develops ultimately depend on the situation. The most common causes of dry eyes include:
  • Aging.
  • Being female, particular during times of hormonal changes like pregnancy or menopause.
  • Taking medication that cause dry eyes as a side effect.
  • Developing certain medical conditions.
  • Your environment and personal behaviors, such as being exposed to smoke or staring at a screen for an extended period.
  • After cataract and/or Lasik eye surgery.
Generally, older men and women experience some form of dry eye as part of the aging process. Other causes vary and changing some of the factors that contribute to dry eyes can help reduce the complications.

DRY EYE TREATMENT OPTIONS
Appropriate dry eye treatments depend on the underlying cause of the problem and the possible solutions that apply to the situation. Dr. Meyerson will discuss the possible environmental factors before determining an appropriate course of action.
When the underlying causes stem from factors beyond your control, such as aging or taking certain medication, we provide appropriate medical treatments. Eye drops that help reduce inflammation in the eyes, or on the eyelids can help reduce the discomfort. Alternatively, we suggest medications that help your eyes produce more tears. Treatments vary, based on the cause.
Dry eyes increase the risk of developing certain eye infections or other complications. The tears help nourish your eyes, so it is important to produce quality tears and ensure that the amount keeps your eyes healthy. For more details about treatment solutions or to set an appointment, contact us today.

Dry eye disease won't have a permanent effect on your vision, but there is no reason to endure dry, itchy and uncomfortable eyes, especially since there are so many treatment options to increase moisture and comfort. It's also important to realize that this is a chronic disease that needs constant treatment. Dr. Meyerson will work with you to create a long term strategy to keep your eyes as comfortable as possible.
